Are Your Pressure Care Mattresses Up to the Challenge of COVID-19 Era Decontamination Efforts?

Sometimes it seems like the stress and anxiety caused by the global pandemic have been as terrible as COVID-19 itself.

Shutting down borders and businesses. Social distancing. Loss of everyday freedoms and more importantly, loss of loved ones.

Across Europe, hospitals, care centres, and our frontline caregivers have performed brilliantly to help those infected by COVID-19 survive and return to good health. While it appears we may have won the initial battle against the coronavirus, there is still a war to be fought—the war of constant decontamination of facilities, patient rooms, medical equipment and surfaces to ensure infections  don’t prevail. This is especially true in wards or rooms where persons are suspected or confirmed of having been infected by the coronavirus.

Although the coronavirus is most often spread person-to-person through respiratory droplets, experts say the coronavirus may remain viable for hours or even days on a variety of surfaces such as walls, floors, bed mattresses and linens, and even medical devices. That’s definitely a cause for concern, particularly in the case of poorly made products that may already to susceptible to failure and are difficult to sterilise between uses and over time. 

It is now more important than ever to scrutinise the products used in hospitals and healthcare centres for direct patient care to ensure they are designed to mitigate the spread of disease and equally important, stand up to ongoing decontamination and infection control efforts.

There is good news on this front. Firstly, Superior Materials and Build Quality

Higher quality pressure-care mattresses such as those made by Affinity have a top cover made with a stretchable, waterproof polyurethane material. The waterproof nature of the material prevents body fluids and respiratory discharge from leaching into the mattress and contaminating it. The imperviousness of the material also facilitates repeated disinfecting of the mattress surface to combat any possible source of hospital-acquired infections such as the coronavirus. 

Material failures such as a tear or a hole along a seam are rare with Affinity's pressure care mattresses. Material failures are fairly common for the polyurethane coating on cheaper, often Chinese sourced, mattresses – significantly reducing the protective nature of the material. The coating can start peeling and degrading in patches after a few short months. It’s safe to say mattresses made from inferior materials may not withstand coronavirus-killing decontamination efforts.

Pressure care mattress designs vary widely. Proven by research


Affinity systems were tested on over 40 standardised room Hydrogen Peroxide Vapour (HPV) decontamination cycles. No significant off- gassing of HPV was observed directly following the decontamination cycle and therefore the products are suitable for use by patients immediately after completion of aeration.

When it comes to decontamination, hydrogen peroxide is powerful. According to the U.S. Centres for Disease Control, a concentration of 3% hydrogen peroxide can deactivate rhinovirus—the respiratory virus that primarily causes the common cold—in just eight minutes. It’s highly effective at neutralising a wide range of microorganisms, including viruses, bacteria, fungi, and spores.  

But, hydrogen peroxide can also damage some surfaces and possibly disrupt electronics. Which is why Bioquell recently tested three of Affinity's pressure care mattresses to determine how well they would hold up to repeated decontamination efforts using HPV room decontamination technology. Specifically, they wanted to determine if decontamination efforts would shorten the life of Affinity's mattresses and pumps and if there was any off-gassing of hydrogen peroxide following decontamination cycle.

While we can’t go into details here, the study found all three pressure care mattresses and their pumps to be fully compatible with Bioquell’s HPV technology and are recommended for use in patient rooms requiring HPV decontamination. There was no visible deterioration of the mattress materials and coating. Additionally, there was no significant off-gassing of hydrogen peroxide post treatment. The mattresses are ready for patient use immediately after being decontaminated.
